Baby Sleep Plan : The Basics Explained
Most parents of newborn babies will cite the lack of sleep as the only drawback in welcoming the new addition to the family. The shock of just how bad regularly interrupted sleep can make you feel can come as an unpleasant surprise particularly for first time parents. It’s perfectly normal for your baby to wake several times during the night during the early months of his or her life, luckily there are some simple methods you can try out to help your baby sleep more peacefully.
For the first few months of your baby’s life regular night feeds are going to be necessary so the best advice is to try to nap when your baby is a sleep. After several weeks however your baby should become more alert during the day and this is your chance to teach him or her about the difference between daytime and night. So during the day make as much as you like, don’t tiptoe around, play games with your baby and make sure you draw the curtains back to let in the natural daylight.
When it comes to early evening this is the time to calm things down. Speak to your baby in a quieter, soothing tone, don’t play games and start to dim the lights to get your baby used to the natural rhythms of the day. This will help your baby to understand the difference between day and night.
At around 3 months of age your baby may be ready for a bedtime routine. Creating a calming ritual that leads up to baby being put to bed can be one of the best ways to get your baby to sleep, as the repetition each night helps to make your baby feel calm and secure. A bedtime ritual will also give you some precious together time during your baby’s early years. Begin about an hour before you want to put your baby to bed by calming down activities and dimming the lights. A bath can also be useful before bed and can be fun for both of you.
Once your baby is washed and in a fresh nappy and sleep-suit you could read him or her a bedtime story but nothing too lively! After this give your baby a cuddle and put him or her to sleep on their back, you could then sing gently to your baby or use a wind up musical toy or mobile that plays a gentle and soothing tune to help lull your baby to sleep.
