Five Little Known Recommendations Whenever Transplanting Any Tree That will Keep It From Dying

This may make your newly transplanted specimen tree almost guaranteed to live and it will be able to look great year after year and prosper as part of your landscape. These instructions are something you must read before you let your trusty landscaper, garden center, or tree nursery sell you something.

1) Please do not plant the tree to deep. Trees need oxygen just as you or I do, when you pile extra dirt over the roots you will be lowering the amount of oxygen that will reach the roots. Some trees tend to be more sensitive to this than others; Maple trees are very sensitive to being planted to deep. It is better to plant one or two inches above ground level and mulch around it.

2) Please do not pile mulch or dirt surrounding the trunk. Many parts of the tree are meant to stay under the ground and certain areas are intended to be above ground. When you heap a bunch of mulch or dirt covering the trunk you are putting a section of the tree that was supposed to be above ground, below ground. This will induce the trunk to decay and your freshly transplanted tree to perish. Mulch around the tree but leave about one inch separation between the trunk and the beginning of the mulch

3) You shouldn’t let the rabbits kill your tree. Rabbits happen to be my arch enemy when it comes to trees. In the winter, when they get hungry and there is little to eat they will resort to ingesting the bark off your tree. They will chew on a nice ring all the way around your tree, killing your specimen tree every time. Nurseries, Garden Centers, Tree Farms and Landscapers, will not warranty a tree that has animal destruction. Put a piece of corrugated pipe around the base of the tree for the winter to keep the critters away.

4) Get some root stimulator with Mycorrhizal Fungus inside it. This fungus thrives in nature where there is a inherent underground ecosystem. The fungus attaches to the roots and provides vitamins and minerals and moisture to the tree. There is a symbiotic connection between the roots and the fungus. When you grow a new tree there is not any of this fungus in the ground given that the fungus needs to be connected to the roots of a tree for it to survive. The bottom line without getting in too much detail is, get it, it works! Get it in the spring for better benefits. You can make use of this on your plants as well; give your whole landscape a little increase for the season.

5) Too much water will kill your tree just as easily as too little water. There is no hard and fast rule on how much to water, even so, you cannot afford not to water your tree incorrectly. This is the number one reason new trees die.

Educational toys and games

Playing and learning are so closely related that they often can’t be distinguished at all. In one way or another, most games are educational – even if it were only in educating the player up to a higher level of competition. That’s quite often overlooked, I believe… but it’s true: even your very own recreational game of tennis, on a sweet summer afternoon with a frefreshing drink witin hands reach, is an educational game!

But let’s be realistic: when talking about educational toys, more often than not we refer to learning systems for our children. Especially in the last decade or two, an enormous number of educational “tools” have been developed for children of all ages, and even for grown-ups. The latter may or may not be intentional, but a fact is that many of the more ingenious educational or learning systems, like those dealing with science and nature, are enthusiasticaly used by the parents of the children for whom the gift was originaly intended!

This will less easily happen with educational toys for very young children, like alphabet blocks or ABC blocks. And then there’s the enormous range of educational games/toys for all ages in-between! Looking back on my own youth in the post-war years I am very much amazed by all the educational tools that are available now! On the other hand I believe that our childrens own creative development suffers from those pre-chewed and bite-sized chunks. I used to be quite happy with the almost proverbial cigar box from my grandfather, out of which I created houses, factories and garages – the box that is, not my granddad.

So it’s all a matter of relativity, I reckon. Some things are lost, others are gained. But at least, to the considerable relief of sometimes desperate parents, buying educational games and toys has become easier than it was ever before. Generally speaking, this is an improvement.
